Suicide in Alabama
Suicide is an unfortunately reality of every society, and Alabama is not immune to it. There are more suicides than homicides every year in Alabama, and 2019 saw its largest suicide rate since 1970 when they first started tracking it.
Statistics:
- White males make up over 70% of suicide deaths
- Black females have the lowest rate of suicide
- The 10 counties with the highest suicide rates, in order, are Jefferson, Mobile, Madison, Baldwin, Shelby, Montgomery, Calhoun, Houston, Talladega and Cullman.
Fortunately there are many outreach and support groups available throughout Alabama to help individuals and families with suicide, before and after, and especially help individuals facing dire situations. Some of those support groups are listed here, linking to their sites:
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Suicide Prevention Resource Center
Alabama Suicide Prevention and Resources Coalition
